How did Caleb turn 40 just now? I mean, he still looks like he's 29 and has no gray hair. He still shreds at the mountain and has energy all day. He rides bikes all the time with teenagers. He still watches South Park and laughs hysterically. He can still quote movies from his childhood and memorizes new movies after only watching them once. He can still sleep allllllll day long, I mean really, all day...
We decided to head up to Leavenworth. It's a cute little German town in Washington. Our friends couldn't go at the last minute, so we decided to take our snowboards instead of snowshoes. Most of the mountains were sold out at the last minute, but we found one that was open so we went just the two of us. It's called Mission Ridge and it actually was pretty nice for being a smaller place. It was a Saturday and there were no long lines, and the powder was nice. It was really dry snow and kind of sunny until lunch. We ate at the mountain and had the best burgers ever for mountain food. It was actually really good. After lunch it was so windy and there was a whiteout and we couldn't see anything. We decided to try one more run before we quit, and that turned into five more runs. It got better and we just felt like riding. I could spend all day at the mountain with him. He plays around and does 360s all over, rides switch, cuts through trees. He makes the most of every run. He did manage to fall and knock the wind out of himself with his own elbow and take a huge chunk of the mountain out. And I managed to clip my edge, fall over and crash my head (lucky for my helmet), and made my neck sore for a couple days. But really we weren't too sore and had a great time.
We went and walked through the town every day we were there. Three days total and it was absolutely gorgeous during the day and at night. The town is so cute. The food was ok the first night we ate, but the second night we went to a much nicer place and the food was rad. So good! The only bummer is that we couldn't eat inside the restaurants. Our house was super close to the village area so we were home with our hot food within five minutes, but it's not the same as eating in a restaurant and getting drinks and taking your time. But it did make it easier to veg out and hang just the two of us. The shopping was all pretty tacky and tasteless, but we still went into every store at least once. We also just watched kids sledding and all the touristy people eating in the pop-up igloos that restaurants are using to beat the Covid restrictions. It was too cold for us, we would rather eat inside our house. I can't relax and eat when I'm about to chip my own tooth from chattering teeth.
The drive was even amazing on the way there and the way back. Just talking and listening to music and podcasts. We stopped in Portland and had some Salt N Straw ice cream on the way back and went shopping at some stores. We took the long way home and loved it. We were sad that our friends didn't make it, but also not sad at the same time. It felt more like an anniversary trip that a birthday trip. Love you to death Caleb and can't wait to watch you age better than the rest of us.
