Speech therapy for my little man

Calvin officially hates the English language. He really refuses to repeat sounds, words, or even sign language. I don't know what it is with this kid, but he can totally communicate without a word. Somehow I know whether he wants milk, water, snacks, or food by him saying the word "go" with different tones. He only says about 12 words right now and even some words he used to say, he has since stopped using. For example, he used to say ball, dog, bubbles, and apple. Now he won't. He just looks at you with this shy smile and runs away.

His pediatrician referred him to Willamette Education for a test to see if he would qualify for their services. After two hours of testing we learned that he has great hearing, problem solving, cognitive development, socialization, and knows a lot for his age. The evaluators were very impressed. High marks on everything but speech. In order to qualify you have to score between 75-85 in two categories, or below 75 in one. He got a 65 in speech. Everything else was high 90s or 100.

Now we get a therapist to come to our house every two weeks. She shows us ways to get Calvin to look at our mouth when we talk and try to get him to repeat sounds. So far, he talks the least when she is here. In fact last week, he ran into my room, shut the door, and sat on the other side so we couldn't get him out. She brings toys to play with and he will usually take them and try to leave. Even normal sounds he makes around us all the time like "brrrr" for a car sound, he refuses to make for her. I think he finds her annoying. And to be honest, I think we all think she's annoying. But she has some good tips.

Caleb and I have been with him for all his appointments so far so we are both learning how to teach Calvin to talk. It's been almost two months now and we think he learned one new thing. He started to say "boat". But he only said it for about two days and he's stopped again.

Somebody please tell me that it doesn't matter and he will start talking soon. For now we just started having activities at night that may or may not help him start to talk more. Wish us luck!
